When Should a Homeowner Replace the Air Conditioner?

Nothing lasts forever. Summer days turn into night. Kids grow up. And, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, air conditioning systems only last about 10 years––sometimes even less. It’s hard for some homeowners to realize that their units need replacing. However, there are some signs that they should look out for.

It might be time to put an old unit out to pasture if one notices:

Strange Sounds, Foul Odors

smellAn AC system shouldn’t make any noise, save an ambient hum. If the unit makes hissing, grinding, or clanking sounds, this could point to a loose component in the AC system. This is not something that will get better with time. It could endanger residents’ health and lead to carbon monoxide leaks, poor indoor air quality, and other complications.

The same thing goes for odors. An AC system shouldn’t smell like anything. One may consider a replacement if they smell:

  • Something burning. This could mean the AC system is overheating and burning the air filter. Poor ventilation can be a primary cause of overheating.
  • A gunpowder-like smell. Chances are, the air blower burnt out.
  • Rotten eggs. Guess what else smells like rotten eggs? Natural gas. This is a serious health risk. One should evacuate the home immediately and call emergency services. Prolonged exposure could prove fatal.
  • Dirty socks. Mold and mildew can grow inside AC units, especially if they leak constantly. This can cause respiratory problems and prevent the system from working effectively.

High Energy Bills

billThe Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that the average Virginia homeowner spends about $130 on their monthly energy bill. However, a poorly-functioning AC system could increase this figure substantially. That’s because:

  • An AC system that doesn’t work properly may short-cycle, meaning that it turns on and off. This can cause the system to work “overtime” while never achieving the desired temperature.
  • If the AC system never gets to the right temperature, it could consume more energy than it should.
  • Homeowners may plug in desktop fans, space heaters, and other devices to compensate for a poorly-functioning AC system. Naturally, this can cost more money––both in purchasing these devices and powering them on.

Some people may shy away from AC replacement because they’re concerned about installation costs. However, keeping the system on could cost them more money in the long run. Additionally, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, many energy-efficient AC systems are more affordable than ever. Low-income and middle-income families may qualify for tax credits and rebates.

Weak Airflow

An AC system that doesn’t work properly will not produce good airflow. This can lead to:

  • Uneven heating and cooling throughout the home
  • Thermostats with incorrect readings
  • Increased humidity
  • Mold and mildew growth
  • Pest infestations

Long story short: nobody should have to deal with an inefficient AC system. Instead, they can consult a professional to install a new system and increase a home’s livability.
